Case study :nightmare on elmstreet

Analysis: Nightmare on elm street is based on a dream where a man from the children's past comes and haunts them in their sleep. Slowly one by one they all die in the sleep which means they die in reality. Early estimates put Nightmare on Elm Street's opening day gross at approximately $15 million, with a projected opening weekend of $35 million.Ultimately, the film finished its opening with $32,902,299 A Nightmare on Elm Street was originally going to follow the same design as Platinum Dunes' other remake, Friday the 13th, with the writers taking what they thought were the best elements from each of the films and creating a single storyline with them. Eventually, they decided to use Craven's original storyline, and try to create a scarier film. That being, they decided to remove the one-line quipping Freddy, who had become less scary and more comical over the years, and bring him back to a darker nature; this included developing the character as a true child molester, something that Craven wanted to do originally in 1984 but changed to a child killer instead. The budget for making this film was $35 million. Here are some of reviews : Let me start off by saying i thought this movie was decent. But I expected a lot more. We all know the story of Freddy Krueger. How he got burnt etc. In this one it's the same, but it's the change of Freddy's character that really lost my interest. Jackie Earle Haley is about as best as you can get at playing Freddy Krueger. No one will ever beat Robert Englund. He's just Freddy Krueger! I don't really need to explain the plot, you all know the plot, BUT, let me explain the changes. In the old Nightmare On Elm Street, Freddy Krueger would always mess with people before he killed them. In this one he just kills them and doesn't mess around. Nothing humorous to say, nothing, just kills them. In the original he was a psychopathic killer who hurts children. In this one he's just a pedophile. Loves to screw all the women and girls. To me, that put me off. All this put me off. So Freddy's character changed a lot, but did it work? Not for me. Didn't work for me. All the acting was decent and there's some gory scenes, all in all, not the remake I was expecting and had hoped for. Everything about it is decent, but nothing great. 5/10 The first scene was my favorite part. Through the remainder of the movie Freddy's voice became more of an annoyance and distraction than a cause for fear (very similar to Christian Bale's Batman). I entered the movie expecting to get whisked away to the wonderful dream-world of Freddy Krueger but was instead pulled into a high school slasher film promoting a typical killer with a grudge and thirst for blood. The fact the victim was trapped inside a dream battling with Freddy wasn't quite enough to satisfy the sense of a nightmarish killer's dream world. The movie lacked the demented mental toyings a character like Freddy should possess (e.g. Pennywise). At the premier, the entire theater let out a "Boo" at the end of the movie. I recommend watching the original Freddy movies instead.

Evaluation: This master shot genre is horror with the subgenre zombies. The conventions are seen through the mis en scene, camera, sound and edit. The zombie conventions in the mis en scene is the pace of the characters,. The victim is fearful and is attempting t run away from the zombie. e victim isn't running away in a very fast manner, they are escaping fast than the zombie but slower than running. This was because the zombie wasn't that close to the victim so they didn't run faster they needed to. The manner in which the zombie was chasing after the victim was very slowly. This has been done because zombies don't run very fast as they are dead and don't have the same energy as living creatures. Further more, the scene was set place inside a building along the corridor and up the stairs. Zombie movies don't usually take place in a forest far away in the woods, they sometimes take place in a public environment such as a school or hospital. In this case, it is set in a school where there are many6 victims which can easily turn into zombies. Another factor which shows the conventions is the camera. The camera shots in zombie movies vary. Sometimes they show it from the zombies perspective, sometimes from the victims and sometimes from a longshot/medium shot. In this master shot we have used different shots. There is a close up, medium shot, and longshot. The medium shot was used to see the zombie or victim from either perspectives, showing the audience the distance between them two. The music which has been used was non diagetic in order to create suspense and mood. The heart beat represents the heartbeat of the victim highlighting fear and horror. Also diegetic sounds were added as the zombie makes noises to scare her victims. This shot has had no edit or shot shots, it is one consistent shot throughout. The editing on the shots were only the sound added and effects. It has been placed in black and white to represent dullness which links in with the zombie. The things that went well in this shot is the sound which has been used due to it being appropriate and linking in with the subgenre. Also the camera shots, mis en scene and editing all contributed to make the genre clear by showing the conventions. What could have been better is the ending, it wasn't clear to the audience what was happening and had questions as to why the character at the end was smiling.

The best shot from the opening was when the brakes were shown and the main focus was on them. this forshadows what will happen later on in the upcoming scenes. The fact that at the beginning there was a child who looked depressed or effected by sone thing bad, sets sense of suspense and keeps the viewers wondering what has happened or what will happen. The young girl Anna later on passes away and this makes the beginning scene make more sense and the different scenes all fit in with the accident. The images in 'three colours blue' are a lot more powerful than the sound. this is because there's a lot of meaning and questions behind the images. The focus tends to be more on the scenes than the sound. Also there was little dialogue in the opening which allowed the viewers to think for themselves what the storyline will be about
